John Mattock

Senior Associate Trainer

I have been with Canning since its adolescent years, when the creative people there synthesised linguistics, semantics, rhetoric, social anthropology, psychology, inductive-deductive pedagogy…and used that recipe to help all kinds of people in all kinds of jobs to understand each other and make things happen.
With Canning since 1976
Over decades, John has built a career in professional learning and development, with Canning at the core. He has worked as coach / trainer / consultant with business people at all levels, in all sectors, on six continents.
His range includes one-to-one coaching, development and delivery of small-group programmes, teambuilding within projects, moderation of corporate events, and webinars. Themes include negotiation skills, proposition development, presentation technique, strategic sales, working across cultures, bids & proposals, conference facilitation, agenda design, leadership, remote teamworking.
His background is in languages and literature (BA Hons Russian with French), from which he moved to the telecoms sector in a marketing role at a time of great change. He brings to the world of business the timeless principles of clarity and conviction. His examples and metaphors are more likely to come from history, theatre or popular media than from corporate boardrooms or MBA texts.
